Eschewing a traditional runway show for an intimate couture presentation, Riccardo Tisci was able to brilliantly capture the Japanese mood he was in and explain his thought-provoking designs to his audience. A total of ten dresses were shown in detail from both the front and back–the latter of which were simply stunning. In suspending the clothes, Tisci allowed his audience to appreciate how he paid homage to the Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno, who recently died at age 103. It was couture, and in Tisci’s mind that translated to zero daywear–but so be it. This collection, with its sharp, rigid shoulders, perpendicular lines and goth underlying theme, is very client specific; one has to appreciate, and be able to wear, skin-tone prints, for example, that, upon closer inspection, are comprised of thousands of matte sequins. Perhaps the most appreciative moment? The stark appliqué cranes on a white-and-lemon sheer dress fashioned from layers upon layers of organza (nevermind the out-there headpieces).
