Miu Miu Hobo with Ostrich Flap: Elements of Style

A bag with so many components at play is not usually my thing, but Miu Miu‘s hobo has congruent, not opposing, elements that make it work together. Yes, there’s a lot going on: the woven handle plus a threaded handle, buckled strap, and an ostrich flap, to name a few. But instead of grating, the effect is harmonious and interesting. The contrasting neutral colors and varying textures give the bag a richness that saturates the eye in a good way.

The shoulder strap works in this case, since the curved top suggests a saddle bag. I don’t even mind the second handle flopping over the front – it just adds casual charm. That buckle is actually just for looks, it doesn’t fasten the flap to the bag but just dangles freely. The other end of the buckle snaps the front and back of the interior together – not sure for what purpose, maybe if you have a lot of stuff it prevents the front of the bag from sagging too far forward. The ostrich flap is apparently real ostrich, which is surprising considering the price. When I called to confirm the skin, their response was, “If it looks like ostrich, then it’s ostrich.” And to revamp the words of Duke Ellington, I guess if it looks good, it is good! At Miu Miu for $1,795.

Pair with: A dual-textured yet monochrome wedge by Cacharel, in soft suede and natural wood, is laid-back, earthy, and summery. Cacharel High Platform Wedge, $635.

  1. I am such a sucker for brown and tan bags, especially hobos. Add some Ostrich, and I am in love! This is such a cute bag – I could see myself wearing this all the time forsaking all others.
