We all make sacrifices for style, but a bag needs to be functional, first and foremost. I’ll make exceptions for minor inconveniences, but it can’t be purely decorative and must ultimately be usable. So is the case with Pauric Sweeney‘s beauty of a satchel. A classic case of a cool look and bad design.
The womanly, voluptuous shape is beyond desirable, but the cutout on the flap, which the handle feeds through, means you’re just asking for trouble. What do you grasp onto when you need to open the bag? (And let’s never forget the point of bags is to hold our stuff!) You’re forced to put it down or cradle the bottom. You would have use always use the shoulder strap, so I’m guessing the top handle is just there for looks. Having said that, the unusual cutout with the handle rising out does look pretty nifty. And so is the palette: black hardware is amazing set against cement gray; I even love the contrasting burnt leather logo tag. Alas, this bag is tempting, but the true bag snob knows better. At Neiman Marcus for $1,420.
Pair with: If you have nothing to carry and want to pack your bag with bubble wrap, then I’d suggest Jimmy Choo‘s “Ellie” leather and meshed shoes: straps to the infinity on 5.5″ heels. Clearly, with no money and phone you don’t have much traveling to do! On Net-a-Porter $1,495.
I would probably have a bigger problem with the lock in the front. I have put bags back on the shelf if I can’t get the locks open. Function is important!
At least with this lock you can leave it undone. But I agree, if I can’t get the lock on the first try, I put it right back.
