Diane von Furstenberg Harri Jewel-Embellished Suede Box Clutch: A Jewel in the Crown or Fool’s Gold?

Sometimes when analyzing a bag, you have to weigh the pros and cons. Diane von Furstenberg has an intriguing idea at work with this suede clutch, but the question is if it’s better in theory than in practice. The price is definitely a win, as is the timeless slim box shape; with a smooth golden frame and longer-than-most chain strap, it has a cool modern-vintage feel. But the embellishments leave me raising an eyebrow.

Examine the clusters of stones individually, and they have a kind of Art Deco-meets-eighties glitz feel, which would work if you’re in the market for a quirky brooch or long-chained pendant. Collaged onto one arts and crafts-inspired bag, with enough space on the black suede to make it look like all seven eccentric clusters are floating aimlessly, and you have a rather purposeless look. I say, if you’re going to give me jewel-encrusted, go all out and bedazzle the whole thing or leave it sleek and minimal and call it a day! What’s your feeling on these offbeat clusters? On Net-a-Porter for $375.
