Moschino Cheap and Chic Spring 2012 Collection: Incredible Edibles

A farmer’s market for a ready-to-wear runway? The world really is going green! While the colorful crates overflowing with fresh pickings were just part of a set for Moschino Cheap and Chic‘s Spring show, fruits and vegetables were all over the place – in the form of playful skirts and dresses. Actually, playful is a major understatement. Think Strawberry Shortcake, but way off artificial sugar and flour. The opener? A juicy, seed-filled strawberry in the form of a babydoll dress that would appeal to the perkiest of little girls (a shot of blue shadow over the eyelids just enforced the sense of cheekyness).

Other dresses were more restrained, but sweet colors, frills – and fruits – still reigned. A Pop Art-style apple here, a bunch of grapes there. Tufts of straw and a T-shirt reading “Eco Chic” drove the point home: designer Rossella Jardini has the earth on her mind. Juicy fruits moved into flower and grass motifs – and even a giant carrot hat. Needless to say, some looks are more, ahem, palatable than others (some full-skirted cocktail dresses are simply delicious), but it reminds us that fashion should not only be environmentally conscious but jam-packed with humor.
