Balenciaga Tube S: A Toggle That Tempts

Taking a cue from Givenchy’s Obsedia bag and its doorknocker adornment, Balenciaga has unleashed a simple silhouette finished off with some hefty hardware. The cylindrical, metal toggle-closure of the Tube S is on the heavy side, but it’s so cool, I can happily live with it. A factor that makes it even more tempting: the toggle can be left undone without disturbing the overall effect.

It also has all the other basic factors I desire: grained calfskin in a selection of shades (I just couldn’t resist hot orange when I saw it in the boutique, but basic black is clean and smart, while neutral rust is a worthy choice), an adjustable strap for on-the-go crossbody action; and no in-your-face logo nonsense. I just love it when Balenciaga embraces their sleek side (without neglecting to including their trademark leather-framed mirror inside!). What’s not to like about this bag?

In Rouille Rust and Noir, at Barneys New York for $1,495 each. Also comes in teal and orange in certain stores.
