Halloween Costumes with Afterlives

Witch_Goddess_Ballerina_Dalmatian

I hate wearing the cheap polyester costumes that look more like craft projects than actual clothes, but I also don’t want to spend on something I’m only going to wear once. This year my family is doing a Wizard of Oz theme, and I am of course the Wicked Witch since my girls snatched up the cuter Dorothy and Glinda the Good Witch characters.

I got this Free People dress (on Shopbop for $98) hoping that it could come in handy again for normal wear. I have a beaded corset that I’m putting over the dress (Midriff? No thanks!) and the perfect green witch’s hat that I did get at a costume store. These other “costumes” can be transitioned with the right accessories (a dog nose, a tiara, or the right hair and makeup) and worn again when not trick or treating.

Dalmatian
Acne Studios Palm Lynx-Print Dress: So many people dress up as black cats. Since monochrome is in, why not be a black and white dog instead? At Saks Fifth Avenue for $400.

Grecian Goddess
Badgley Mischka Collection One Shoulder Mini Dress: All you need to transform this into Aphrodite’s ethereal gown is a crown of laurels (and maybe a metal belt or Grecian sandals). On Shopbop for $295.

Ballerina
Free People Solid Tutu Skirt: A big, fluffy tutu belongs only on Tot Snobs. This draped style makes the dance staple far more wearable. Get it in noir to play the Black Swan! On Shopbop for $98.

Sailor
Sea Shanty Singing Dress in Navy: This one is probably the most specific look so little accessorizing is required. Just top it with a sailor cap, and you’re out the door. On ModCloth for $129.99.

Flapper
Renzo + Kai Beaded Cami Flapper Dress: No movie this year influenced the fashion industry more than The Great Gatsby, so party the night away like Daisy Buchanan herself in this Roaring ‘20s-inspired garb. At Bloomingdale’s for $395.

Tiger
Emilio Pucci Printed Calf Hair, Goat, and Fox Coat: With animal-printed calf hair being the trend of the season, this pick will be like hitting two birds with one stone. Just be sure you’re going to get good use out of it – 20 grand+ is a lot for a Halloween costume! On NET-A-PORTER for $21,750.
