Lately, NET-A-PORTER’s top-notch buyers have been amassing and curating their favorite uncommon brands and unexpected items from around the globe, a.k.a. the Finds collection, and this clutch from Hong Kong-based brand MATTER MATTERS is a prime example. Cool, different, and slightly strange – but all good. It’s clearly all about the offbeat shape and the juxtaposition of elements here, including soft gray leather and hard black and off-white acrylic. While the proportions are a little odd, those shapes and that scale are what make this clutch unique.
This label is inspired by post-modern art movements, including Cubism and Bauhaus, and it’s clear the Art Deco era served as muse in this case, thanks to the big, bold acrylic frame (and the name). That half-circle and boxy square closure sticks out quite a bit, physically and visually, making it stand out, front and center. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The appeal is in the fact that this bag is not quite right and just a bit off-kilter yet thoroughly intriguing: a fine line to walk and this design manages to strike the right balance. Meanwhile, at this price, this clutch makes for such a great value, it’s worth buying if only for the attention factor. On NET-A-PORTER for $445.
Pair with: Complement a bag that goes pop with a pair of bordeaux-hued shoes that delivers clean decadence, like Manolo Blahnik’s Stresty half-d’orsay pumps. At Barneys New York for $735.
