Mary Katrantzou MVK Leather Shoulder Bag: Form and Substance

Mary Katrantzou MVK Leather Shoulder Bag

This season, Mary Katrantzou has spring-boarded from her collaboration with Longchamp, which reaped a collection of brightly printed bags (think patterns featuring hot air balloons and Southeast Asian temples), to a full-fledged line of her own. The results are as astoundingly good as her trademark elaborate, highly technical prints.

Even more surprising is the fact that her bags are completely different from her signature aesthetic of abundance. On the other hand, they prove how fundamental form and shape are to her designs.

This MVK flap bag is genius beyond belief. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen: the flap fits over the body of the bag and comes down to complete the box pocket as its “lid.” With super-clean colorblocking and crisp touches of hardware, the result is a geometric masterpiece. The MVK comes in a variety of savvy colorful combos, but it’s this one I’m obsessed with. Burgundy and navy is amazing for fall, and the bright white burst of a pocket lightens up the semi-somber hues for a perfect balance. Mary Katrantzou bag on MATCHESFASHION.COM for $1,931.

Pair with: An elaborate bustier, like Marni’s wool-felt peplum creation, increases the drama and femininity by mega-high levels. On NET-A-PORTER for $1,070.
