Hourglass Launches Skincare – And It’s Inspired by Amniotic Fluid

EQ

If you’ve used Hourglass’ primer you’ve probably been wondering why the heck, in all these years, they haven’t launched skincare. It’s simply the best (well, tied with Tom Ford’s). The primer not only allows for longer wear of your foundation, but it’s moisturizing and doesn’t weight down skin or clog pours. It feels like a moisturizer, and I’ve heard that people actually use it as such. But now, finally the day has come…the brand has launched skincare!

The products they’ve launched with are Equilibrium Biomimetic Skin Active Serum ($350), which is meant for nighttime use, and Equilibrium Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Day Fluid ($115), meant for daytime use. Even though Hourglass is a luxury brand, the new products are pricier than I anticipated, but I tried a sample and they sure don’t disappoint. First off from a packaging perspective, the dark glass protects the fluids from sun damage. They also have a push dispenser so you’re not exposing the product every time you apply it. As for the actual formulation, there is a ton of research and science behind it. All these years people have been asking for the brand to do skincare, it’s not that they haven’t been listening, they’ve just been hard at work trying to come out with something that will actually deliver the results people have come to expect from Hourglass. Fittingly, the product has a very unique formulation; it’s inspired by amniotic fluid. Yup.

Here’s the scoop. Phosphatidylglycerol is the lipid (fat) found in the protective liquid surrounding a fetus, and this fat has been linked to normalizing skin-cell growth. With that in mind, Hourglass spent years developing a first-of-its-kind ingredient blend that would act in the same fashion but is made from plant-based sources, and that’s what forms the basis of their new launch. That’s not all however. There’s a process called ultrasonication that comes into play. It’s a process whereby liquids are treated with high-energy sound waves to deliver the beneficial ingredients deep into the epidermis. Of course, the lighter the particles are, the easier they will penetrate, and fittingly, Equilibrium is super lightweight. The actives are especially potent in the nighttime treatment product because cellular regeneration, which works to keep skin looking young, happens when you’re sleeping.

I guess when it comes to staying youthful, there couldn’t be a more appropriate inspiration than amniotic fluid!
