Is Cannabis the New "It" Skincare Ingredient?

Given all the recent happenings on the legalization front, cannabis has been dominating headlines, but it might not be long before you start seeing the ingredient in beauty aisles as well. Turns out, active cannabis extracts may work wonders on skin for common ailments like eczema, acne, and psoriasis (and no, it won’t cause a high in the process or show up on a standard drug test). So far the leader in cannabis-based skincare is Apothecanna, a brand started a few years ago in Brooklyn. Their products are made using cannabis flower oil, seed oil, and plant matter. “The cannabis plant is composed of over 200 types of cannabinoids (chemicals unique to the cannabis plant). These active compounds have been shown to have both analgesic (pain-killing) and anti-inflammatory (healing) properties when applied to the epidermal layer of the body (skin),” say the Apothecanna team, which explains why many people are turning to the brand to help soothe their bodies post-workout.

Intuitively, it makes sense. If smoking the plant gives you the feeling of relaxation, why wouldn’t it help topically with inflammation? That said, research is still preliminary, but given the high-quality ingredients used by brands like Apothecanna (all products are formulated with organic essential oils, and there are no artificial fillers, parabens, or GMO ingredients), it’s perhaps worth giving a schmear before we have clinical backing.

Is your interest peaked? Have you tried applying the plant topically? Other promising brands include Carun and Mary’s Medicinals.
