Beauty Trend: Washing Your Face with Sparkling Water

Beauty Trend

These days it seems like everywhere you turn there is a new product or technology to enhance your beauty routine. Surprisingly more and more beauty trends revolve around what’s in your fridge – not on your vanity. The buzz among beauty editors these last few months has been about washing your face with sparkling water. It’s a trend that’s come out of Japan and Korea where it’s a practice that has been going on for quite some time, but it’s only now picking up in the west. It sounded crazy to me! I actually hate sparkling water; it makes me feel bloated and irritates my throat. That said, while it seemed bizarre, it was also harmless enough to try.

The idea is to wash your face with a mix of equal parts still and sparkling water to not only invigorate your face (it does feel good in the morning…), but also to clean your pores on a deeper level. It seems a bit excessive, I know; when I first heard about this, I thought of those rumors that Jerry Seinfeld showers in Evian water, but hey, if it helps, it sure is cheaper than almost any beauty product! If you’re going to experiment with it, I’d recommend going the extra mile and using a water like AQUA Carpatica, which is nitrate-free, loaded with minerals (at least by water standards), and a naturally-sparkling mineral water. Nitrates are contaminates from the runoff of fertilizer use, the leakage from septic tanks, and the erosion of natural deposits, so it’s best to keep those out of your body and off your face. While I can’t say for sure whether this trend has had an effect on my skin, it’s refreshing and the “texture” does seem to help with exfoliation and oxygenation. Plus, given that our skin is our largest organ, it can’t hurt to lather it with some extra aqua. Among the skin benefits of water are calcium, which helps the body generate new skin cells and shed old cells, and magnesium, which has anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and allergy-reducing properties.

Will you be trying this new trend? In any case, with summer coming up, this is a good reminder of how important it is for our health and skin to load our diet with water and water-rich foods…both inside and out!
